The works under consideration by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO), this past weekend, highlighting orchestral composers’ youthful endeavors, were George Gershwin’s “Lullaby” and Kurt Weill’s Symphony Number 1 “Berliner.” Both wrote the works when they were in their early 20s and each of them became renowned for their work for the stage and in popular music. Most sadly, both died so young, Gershwin at 38 and Weill at 50. In a world where 60-plus year old rock stars still tour, we can only wonder what these composers would have turned out in later years.
