On the evening of February 23, the colossal Lexington Avenue Armory was aglow, playing host to the hottest winter benefit, the Bailey House annual charity Auction and Party. Usual host duo of ten years, Tim Gunn and Simon Doonan, passed the baton over to renowned fashion designer Carmen Marc Valvo and “The View” co-host Sherri Shepherd as the evening’s star commères.
New York trendsetters, red-carpet glitterati, and a swarm of affluent, philanthropic good-doers opened hearts and wallets for the auction’s prime picks. My chances at waving my paddle, an electronic hand-held doodad, for a date with Bravo’s own Andy Cohen, a Costa Rica getaway, or a Herb Ritts original, zapped out mighty quickly, as thousands of dollars bounced back and forth as if auction bidders were playing a casual round of poker, with nearly $400,000 raised. My win was a sleek pair of Marc Jacobs sunglasses. I may not roll with the big dogs, but I sure can accessorize like one! Read more

An auditorium full of striking leatherfolk, leather titleholders and other luminaries, and sexy models, in leather and in very little, for a good cause—what could be bad? All of these were present when Folsom Street East (FSE), which puts on the leather street festival of the same name during Leather Pride Weekend in June, and is celebrating its 15th anniversary, as well as its first year as a tax exempt organization, held its first annual leather and fetish fashion show, “A Fetish for Fashion,” coordinated by FSE’s Devin MacLachlan, at New York LGBT Community Center, on February 12, as a benefit for the Center. Kean University’s fourth annual Human Rights Conference was held in the Wilkins Theater on February 11. “Immigration: A Melting Pot No More?” took up the topic of illegal or undocumented immigrants.
The attendees were students from a mixture of classes, from middle school through high school and college, as well as guidance counselors, teachers, education professionals, and other people interested in understanding the aspects of the debate that is raging now, as it has periodically throughout the existence of the United States of America.
